Robert E. "Gene" Poland

December 10, 1927 - October 19, 2021

Robert E. "Gene" Poland, 93, of Newcomerstown, passed away Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at Community Hospice Truman House. He was born December 10, 1927 in Stone Creek to the late Harris F. and Bessie (Wherley) Poland. Gene served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy. He was married to Mary Lou (Holt) on August 6, 1949, until her passing in 2000. Gene worked as a barber for 50 years. He attended Zion Lutheran Church in Stonecreek, and he was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge #1555 and the VFW Post 3303, both of Newcomerstown and long time member of the American Legion Thomas C. Montgomery Post 431 of Newcomerstown. Gene is survived by his son, Bruce (Jenny) Poland; his grandchildren, Jody Knisley, Amy (Mark) Berry, Jennifer Workman; his brother, Donald (Velma) Poland. Along with his parents and wife, Gene was preceded in death by his siblings, June Reifenschneider, John Poland, and Carl Poland. A graveside service will be Friday, October 29, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Stone Creek Cemetery with Rev. Cathy Ammlung officiating. A Military service will be conducted by Newcomerstown Veteran's Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice Truman House, 716 Commercial Ave SW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
