Charles E. Newell, 85 of Gnadenhutten, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 18, 2025 at Truman House Hospice.
Charles was born November 20, 1939, in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee to the late Edward and Verda (Rochelle) Newell. He worked for the US Postal Service before becoming a minister, where he preached the Gospel for over fifty years at the Churches of Christ in Newport, Cadiz, and Newcomerstown, Ohio. He also served as an elder at Newcomerstown Church of Christ until his passing. Charles enjoyed race walking and was the 1966 AAU National Champion. He even competed for a spot on the Olympic race walking team in San Francisco in 1968. Charles had many hobbies and interests, ranging from normal things like western movies and music to more unusual things like befriending all the squirrels in his neighborhood and adding sugar to every food group. He also never met a dog he didn’t like, and the feeling was mutual, probably because he fed them from the table. He would’ve fed your dog from the table too, despite your protestations. He loved performing magic at numerous church camps, acting, and was in the Newcomerstown thespians group at the Olde Main Street Museum. Charles was a lifelong learner and a voracious reader; he really would read just about anything, including a new version of the Bible each year. He also loved learning about and investing in people; Charles never knew a stranger, whether they liked it or not.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of sixty-six years Peggy (Boyer) Newell, whom he married June 14, 1959; and his children, Ryan (Tamara) Newell, Wade (Donna) Newell, Casandra (Gary) Webster and Seth (Joslyn) Newell; and grandchildren Brent (Jamie) Newell, Amber (Tony) Rose, Renee (Paul) Law, Bryanne and Kerstin Webster, Jerra (Jack) Richardson, Samson, Ezra and Saoirse Newell; and great-grandchildren, Aria, Bellamy, Calder, and Zenaida Newell, Charli and Andi Rose, Meghan (Mike) Griffiths, Jacob (Tori) Law, Sydney Law, Briella Law, and Conan Richardson; and great, great-grandchildren Zach and Shay Griffiths, and Roman Law.
Along with his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his daughter Jacinda Newell and grandson John Newell.
A visitation will be held at Addy Funeral Home from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, August 28. An additional visitation will be held on Friday, August 29 at Newcomerstown Church of Christ at 9:00 am with the funeral service to follow at 10:00 am and will be conducted by Robert (Bob) Main. Charles will be laid to rest in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Olivesburg, Ohio
