Clarence "Jack" Thornton Obituary

Clarence E. (Jack) Thornton, 95 of Port Washington, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 23, 2024 at Riverside Manor.

Jack was born October 20, 1928, in Glasgow to the late Henry and Orella Thornton. Jack honorably served in the United States Marine Corp, and was in Air Squadron Eleven in Cherry Point, North Carolina. He later went on to work at Alsco Anaconda in Gnadenhutten where he retired as chief plant engineer. Jack was a member of Gnadenhutten and Fry’s Valley Moravian Church, a former member of Port Washington Moravian Church, a member of the Oriental Chapter Eastern Star #106 Newcomerstown Charter, a member of Lonestar Masonic Lodge #175, a member of the Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Valley of Canton, and a member of Buckhorn Grange and Tuscarawas County Farm Bureau. He was also a trustee for Salem Township for over twenty years. Jack enjoyed traveling, especially going on cruises. He was very involved in his children’s FFA activities while they were growing up. He appreciated wildlife, and enjoyed watching the deer and turkeys around his house.

He is survived by his children Terry (Janice) Thornton of Port Washington, Gary (Shirley) Thornton of Gnadenhutten, Carol (Don) Hoffman of Gnadenhutten, Beverly (Jim) Long of Dennison, Jaynie (John) Norman of Port Washington; grandchildren, Brent Thornton, Diana (Erik) Mariol, Brian Thornton, Jason (Sabrina) Thornton, Jennifer (Kris) Stratton, Michele (Matt) Lieser, Michael (Valerie) Hoffman, Tyler (Alicia) Long, Curtis (Brittany) Long, Blake (Vanessa Scott) Norman, Zachary (Stephanie) Norman; 24 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren with one on the way; his brother Bob Thornton; his special nieces Alesia Decker and Kay Morrison; and many other family and friends

Along with is parents, Jack was preceded in death by his loving wife of 73 years Mabel (Moffit) Thornton; infant daughter, Diana Louise; his siblings Lelah McMahon, Ruth Moore, Florence Anderson, Ethel Norman, Norvel (Hank) Thornton, and Judy Jones; and his granddaughter-in-law Shelly Thornton.

A visitation will be held at Addy Funeral Home from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Thursday, September 26, and from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Friday, September 27. A Masonic service will be held at 10:30 am with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 am with Pastor David Geyer officiating. Jack will be laid to rest in Union Cemetery in Port Washington.
