Penny Sue (Temple) Mace, age 66, of Mooresville, North Carolina passed away on March 29th, 2025, after a long, but fearless battle with colorectal cancer.
Penny was born in Newcomerstown, Ohio on January 27, 1959. She graduated from Newcomerstown High School in 1977 where she was a member of the marching band. She graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1993 with a degree in elementary education.
Penny lived in several states besides Ohio including North Dakota, South Carolina, and recently North Carolina. Even though she did not reside in Kentucky, she spent a lot of time there. She even fulfilled a dream of hers living near the water in Charleston, South Carolina. She had several careers including teaching elementary school, doing background investigations, working at a call center creating training material, working at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, and eventually retiring in 2020 from the University of South Carolina as the Business Office Manager.
Penny loved spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed good food and eating at different restaurants. She enjoyed crime shows and even served on a Grand Jury one time which she found fascinating. She also enjoyed traveling to Kentucky and Ohio to spend time with family. When in Ohio, she loved going to Amish Country and eating at Dutch Valley Restaurant. She made the best peanut butter fudge. She enjoyed visiting new places. One of her favorite trips was with her son Justin to New York City with no plans, just touring the city. She enjoyed spending time with her two dogs, Cookie and Cooper. After her retirement, she became their personal assistant.
After her cancer diagnosis in 2011, she started running 5k races and marathons. She did not let cancer deter or define her. She was an advocate for education and early cancer screening. She never stopped looking into the newest treatments or trying experimental procedures.
Her most favorite thing in the world was being a "grammy". Her grandson, Tucker, was her "favorite person”. It would be nothing for her to jump in her car and drive to Kentucky to watch a basketball game or take him to basketball camp at the University of Kentucky. They had a bond like no other.
She is survived by her two sons, Joshua Mace (fiancee Brianna Clemons) of Brandenburg, Kentucky and Justin Mace of Mooresville, North Carolina; grandson, Tucker Mace; Sister, Brenda Robinson of Newcomerstown, Ohio; nieces and nephew Randi (Scott) Corbin, Cody (Tanya) Robinson, Shilah (Bryan) Pace, and great niece and nephews Brooke Corbin, Braylon Corbin, Brady Robinson, and Tucker Robinson.
Penny is preceded in death by her parents Harold and Betty Temple.
There will be no services or calling hours. Cremation will take place and her family will have a private gathering at a later time.
